What About AFPs …?

What About AFPs …?

AFPs and contracts really don’t go together. In fact, AFPs represent an expensive proposition in the world of union representation.

While the Machinists have barked incessantly about voice, and everyone being treated equally, AFPs are a special treat at Delta, a treat that an IAM contract would bring to screeching halt.

Consider this:

Under a black and white legally binding union contract, union employees must be MANAGED the same across the system. Therefore, a contract would demand that all flight attendants have equal access to a manager, a mailbox, the same system to cover missed trips (A-Days/Life time Reserve), lounges, office space, and a host of other behind the scenes, lesser items available on a daily basis in a fully operational location.

Now consider this:

Delta opened AFPs as a cost effective way to provide flight attendants flexibility. The threshold for opening AFPs is much lower than for opening a full base, with all the infrastructure that would require.

Fully managed AFPs that would have to be turned into full-fledged bases or satellite bases under an IAM contract would become cost-prohibitive and would leave the company little choice.

Conclusion:

With IAM representation, AFPs will close.

Footnote:

The IAM Continental contract – that same contract where the Machinists gutted work rules, rest, credits and rigs just to maintain pay rates – did not allow for AFPs. If IAM didn’t allow AFPs at Continental, why would they allow them at Delta?
