Another IAM Zero
In spite of three years of campaigning, and after having filed a request for an election with the National Mediation Board, the Machinists union has yet to tell us anything about themselves.
Why so bashful?
The only “promise” the IAM has given us thus far is that there will be no dues paid to them until a contract is ratified, but even that so-called guarantee is not put into the black and white legally-binding language that the IAM and their supporters are so fond of. If they renege on their promise, how would the Delta flight attendants ever be able to enforce language on a flimsy postcard with even flimsier campaign rhetoric?
And think about this: Delta flight attendants are worth $14 million per year to the Machinists, and the Machinists have a proven track record of taking five to seven years to negotiate flight attendant contracts.
$14 Million Here, $14 Million There . . .
. . . pretty soon it adds up to real money. Based on their recent (over the last ten years) history, IAM has taken more than five years to negotiate flight attendant contracts (who knows why it takes them so long, maybe they’re just not good at negotiations or maybe they just don’t really care about their flight attendant members), so IAM is essentially “promising” that they would forego $90 million or more in dues money, after the millions of dollars they have already spent on the Delta campaign.
That IAM “promise” is not real or credible or fiscally responsible. Even if we believed them, would it be right for the other IAM members to carry the Delta flight attendants for the next 5 to 7 years?
That premise – and the IAM promise – have zero credibility.
