A Great Day for IAM
January
13, 2015 was “a great day for the IAM”, according to IAM president Tom
Buffenbarger. In an IAM propaganda video documenting the delivery of
authorization cards to the National Mediation Board, Buffenbarger made this
surprising yet revealing declaration to the camera.
It may have been the excitement of the moment, but in that single utterance he belied the real motivation for the Machinists’ campaign at Delta Air Lines: IAM stands to gain more than $12 million a year in dues directly from the pockets of the Delta flight attendants. Buffenbarger made no mention of how the IAM would benefit the Delta flight attendants. It was all about him and his organization and what we could do for him.
The Machinists have never answered the vital, important, glaringly obvious question of whether they are capable and competent enough to provide $12 million worth of services to us, what those services would entail and who would be accountable for providing them to us.

In
essence, they are refusing to provide us a resume’ or references and failing to
answer any interview questions, but are insisting that we hire them for an
extremely lucrative position. Toss-away platitudes like “we are the union”
simply don’t cut it in light of the profound collective decision ahead of us.
Because of the impact that this decision will have on our careers, work rules and quality of life, it’s more important than ever to become informed about the IAM’s track record and to divulge the important impartial facts.
